Sustainability
Water consumption has been growing at more than twice the rate of
population increase in the last century. Our demand for fresh
water means that we are using more water today than ever before
and with the world’s population set to reach nearly 9 billion
by the year 2042, this trend of consumption is set to rise
further. The UN predicts that 1.8 billion people will be
affected by absolute water scarcity by the year 2025 and a
further two thirds of the world’s population could be under
stress conditions.
Withdrawal of fresh water from our ecosystem should never exceed its
natural replacement rate. However, this is just not possible in
certain areas such as overpopulated towns and cities etc. The
average household water consumption per person is approximately
145-170ltrs/day. That’s 62 cubic metres or 13,600 gallons per
year, of which 1 cubic metre will be used for drinking.
Personal consumption only accounts for a small amount of the overall
water usage, with agricultural and industrial processes being
the main consumer. Agriculture alone accounts for around 70% of
the world’s water usage – Every tonne of grain takes around
220,000 gallons of water to grow.
Reclaiming water is a great alternative for keeping up with the demand
placed on rapidly depleting water sources. Methods include
recycling and filtering ‘greywater’. Aqua-Sol V.V.F
technology makes this possible. For instance, our systems have
been used successfully for water conservation in the
professional car wash industry, were ‘greywater’ is
processed through V.V.F technology and reused. This method
conserves and recycles approximately 95% of the total water
used.
Rain water harvesting is another great method of reducing demand. The
average roof captures 80,000 litres of rainfall every year. This
water can be collected and processed with V.V.F technology,
allowing it to be used for toilets and washing machines, etc,
around the house. The same process can be implemented on a
larger scale for use around the factory or workplace.
Applications for V.V.F technology in conservation and
sustainability are endless.
